Earnings Season Heats Up: Stay Ahead with This Simple Tracking Tool

By Mike Burnick

Stocks just notched new all-time highs last week. Yet the threat of “Tariff Turmoil: Part II” is back in the headlines again.

And now, the next make-or-break catalyst for the market arrives this week: second-quarter earnings season.

The reports start in earnest today with several mega-banks – including JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM), Citigroup Inc. (C), and Wells Fargo & Co. (WFC).

And it just gets busier from there over the next several weeks. There is always a lot riding on quarterly earnings reports.

But this season might be especially interesting – it’s the first since new tariffs were introduced in April, as shown above.

As you can see, “Tariff Turmoil: Part I” back in early April triggered massive earnings estimate cuts for the S&P 500 by Wall Street analysts.

Later, as one tariff deadline after another was postponed or renegotiated, profit estimates did bounce back somewhat, but much of the damage was already done.

Aggregate S&P 500 profit growth for the second quarter dropped sharply – from a +11% estimate at the beginning of 2025 to just +3.5% as earnings reports get underway this week.

That’s a mammoth haircut to corporate America’s expected profitability.

As you can see below, the biggest haircuts to earnings estimates fell on sectors including Consumer Discretionary, Consumer Staples, and Energy.

Meanwhile, profit estimates for Technology – after briefly dipping into negative territory – have now rebounded again. The same is true for the Communication Services and even the stodgy old Utilities sector.

These later sectors, where profit growth estimates weren’t cut much and have since been raised again, could be among the best bets for positive earnings surprises.

The Financial sector has also showed relatively minor earnings estimate cuts compared to the overall S&P 500 heading into reporting season. So, this sector may be a good bet for earnings surprises.

And we won’t have to wait long to find out – with JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo all scheduled to report before today’s opening bell.

P.S. Earnings season may be stealing the spotlight right now – but if you’re looking for the next major catalyst beyond quarterly results, you’ll want to pay close attention to what just happened last week.

While Wall Street is focused on big banks and profit forecasts, legendary investor Louis Navellier has uncovered a fast-moving story most investors are missing – one tied to a little-known executive order and a July 22 deadline that could ignite the next phase of the AI boom.

According to Louis, this opportunity lies in a forgotten sector now being “fast-tracked” by the U.S. government – and it could hand early investors explosive gains.

This might be your last chance to get the details. The full replay of Louis’s urgent “Trump AI Day” briefing ends at midnight tonight – and he even reveals the name and ticker of one top stock.
